After a consultation process and much lobbying, the Department of Finance announced yesterday that it has postponed plans to bring forward the pay-and-file deadline for self-assessed tax payers.

There had been plans to bring the deadline forward to September or possibly even June from 2014 onwards. The change would have affected over 200,000 taxpayers who would have faced the real problem next year of computing and paying their taxes up to five months earlier than the current system.

Unfortunately this is likely to be only a temporary reprise, with the Minister announcing that he still intends to bring the date forward but that it won’t now happen until 2015 at the earliest.
